INSTALLATION: Memory Fort for Coachella
Last summer we were asked to submit a design proposal for Coachella 2020. This would have been a 40’ tall blanket fort. We worked with the familiar, from American kitsch to Breur’s Cesca chairs of our own childhood. When faced with the prompt to create a recognizable but strange image as pavilion, we were drawn immediately to questions of scale and the perceptions of childhood. We’re more interested here in the behind the scenes messiness of life you might imagine around Superstudio’s experimental objects in conjunction with the Continuous Monument. We proposed a set of lounging surfaces below a canopy, created by approximating a stretched blanket with perforated metal over a terrain of known objects. The blanket works to blur and create a larger amorphous body as roof. While traversing below reveals table and chair legs as an arcade-like space and discrete objects are understood only at a distance.
